Song of the Week!

Song covers are one of those hit-or-miss things in life. Most song covers that I’ve seen have done a pretty good job at reducing a song’s many elements into one (or maybe two) instruments and a very nice voice as well. But I find that it usually lacks that element that makes an original song stick in your head. It might be good to listen to for a little bit as a break from the usual, but I’ve never heard a song cover that has moved me so powerfully…at least until now.

In a way, the sound of the cellos in this week’s song (Nothing Else Matters by Apocalyptica) adds an element that the original song by Metallica never had. It emanates a sad, almost woeful tune that seems to really get at the heart of what the lyrics were trying to do:

So close no matter how far

Couldn’t be much more from the heart

Forever trusting who we are

And Nothing Else Matters

I should note that apart from one or two of their old songs, I’m not a huge fan of Metallica, especially considering the ridiculously bad songs they’re coming up with (I heard approximately 1.5 songs from the album Lulu, and there was no need for me to continue). But listening to this song reminds me of the good songs they have. Enjoy!
