Song of the Week!

I know this is a little bit earlier than I should be normally posting, but I think I’m going to be really busy this week. So I figured I shouldn’t leave you folks without an awesome song of the week to hold you over! This week’s song is a beautiful one. It was sung by Cesaria Evora, who recently died in her native Cape Verde. I have to admit, I never heard of her until she died, but I wish I had heard of her earlier because of her beautiful voice. Known as the ‘Barefoot Diva’ because of how she often sang, this song seems like a solemn, remorseful and longing cry for a long-lost lover. The song is in Cape Verdean Creole, but the rough translation goes something like this:

Who showed you…
this distant way?
Who showed you…
this distant way?
This way …
to Sao Tomé

Longing, longing,…
Longing,…
For this land of mine, Sao Nicolau

If you write me letter,…
I will write you back
If you forget me,…
I will forget you…
Until the day…
You come back

It’s almost hypnotic to listen to. Don’t be surprised if you find more Cesaria Evora songs posted in the future. Rest in peace, Cesaria. Hope you like this song!
